16e Pavillon des Arts et du Design Paris 2012
Location of 16e Pavillon des Arts et du Design Paris 2012

Refinement and elegance, the Pavilion of Art and Design represents the French taste, which promulgates the mixture and the juxtaposition of styles, has today a worldwide recognition. The Pavilion is a demonstration of diversity which perfectly handles styles and sceneries.

For each edition of the Pavilion the exhibitors compete with creation, taste and talent to offer a unique and wonderful atmosphère on their stand. The Pavilion of Art and Design transforms itself in a great, smart and tasteful scene, limitless reunion of talents from all over the world.

A major event in the art market, this event now takes place in several capitals (Paris – London – New York). Devoted to design, the decorative arts and 20th Century painting, the PAD brings together the most talented French and international dealers of the moment.

In Paris, the PAD is an eclectic fair that advocates contrasting styles and a mix of genres. It is the trendiest date on the Parisian calendar and offers the public a refined selection of 20th Century creation.

The 2012 edition is notable for the numbers of important art dealers in attendance, the growing presence of contemporary design and the unstoppable rise of the decorative arts.

Currently, the PAD is indisputably the world's biggest historical, modern and contemporary design fair. The PAD selection committee has continued its good work of selecting exhibitors: generations are being renewed, the circle is expanding and growing considerably in strength and influence.

The early 20th axe has been reinforced through the presence of Oscar Graf and Franck Laigneau, but also thanks to Willy Huybrechts' first Parisian participation (the gallery already exhibits in London and New York).

The contemporary design galleries present last year have renewed their participation in 2012: the Italian gallery Secondome, Maria Wettergren, BSL, Tools Gallery. The arrival of London gallery Fumi also adds to this axe.

24° Puces du Design Paris 2011
Location of 24° Puces du Design Paris 2011

Throughout history, design has been a precursor ... Whether in terms of technologies, functionality or conceptuality ... each decade has shown that designers were at the forefront of their time and precursors of techniques and trends.

By presenting a comprehensive and divers image of creations of the 50s till 90, Puces du Design gathers for their 24th edition. At Quai de la Loire Valley, along the Bassin de la Villette, Paris 19°, 100 antique dealers from worldwide specialized in design, show their stock that marked the 20th century.

50s
In the post-war period of the '50s, a major flow was to find ways of economic production for design. It is the great era of metal structures and bent wood. It is also the decade in which appeared the most iconic pieces of design that, after more than half a century, have not aged a bit and continue to express the idea of modernity.

60s
In the '60s: finding new ways to meet new lifestyles. The designers were focused on responding to new uses and a new lifestyle. The interiors are smaller and require furniture more functional. The advent of television and other modern appliances, induce the creation of new types of furniture. Often widely distributed, parts of the '60s focus their interest on the function and adopting forms of great simplicity.

70s
In the '70s, the euphoria of the era made that design was flirting with art. The seventies were marked by a strong feeling of freedom. Using plastic materials offered countless new possibilities which one could not even imagine before.

80s
The eighties were marqued by a certain austerity and disillusionment. After the seventies, a period in which anything was possible, designers were divided into two camps: those who liked sober shapes and others, such as Memphis, search for the provocative spirit of the seventies or use geometric shapes but with playful colours or scale differences. The eighties marked the beginning of the mediatisiation of design, including the appearance of the iconic Philippe Starck.

90s
In the '90s, the design is split into two worlds: luxury and accessible ... The starisation of designers continues. Some of them enter the galleries, museums... Their faces become known to the general public. While some, like Ron Arad, breaking all sales records at auctions, at the same time design makes its entrance in everyones living room, since small design objects are made accessible to a large public.

With its various editions (Paris, London, New York*), the PAD (Pavilion of Art and Design) is one of the world's largest art and design fairs. In terms of its competitors, it is without a doubt THE fair of traditional, modern and contemporary design. It brings together several times a year in the world's biggest capitals and art markets, the best dealers in design as well as in decorative and modern art.

Strengthened by this international momentum, the PAD has put together a stunning fair for its 15th year, finding new energy thanks to this international influence. This year's show will wow the public with its rigorous standards and the exceptional quality of work on display.

A third of the exhibitors (approximately 20 or so of the 80 participants) for this year's edition of the PAD are new to the event. A strong international presence can be felt in this year's fair. To this day, 18 international exhibitors have already confirmed their participation. English and Italian exhibitors are particularly numerous this year due in part to the success of the PAD London and to the strength of design in Italy. The fact that Paris remains the world capital of decorative arts, as well as the strength of the current market, are all signs that this year's event in Paris will be one of the highlights of the Spring 2011 arts calendar.

The autumn will be design, the autumn will be retro, the autumn will be nice !

In last May, the Puces du Design has confirmed their position: in spite of a not springlike weather, 30,000 buyers, visitors, professionals and other collectors have been on the rendezvous for discovering, and buying, what the exhibitors coming from several places in Europe, had selected. For all the commentators, the spring edition 2010 was of high quality and the month of october is announced to be promising too.

From next October 8 to 10, while an exhibition in the Musée des Arts Décoratifs of Paris will give a tribute to design of the years 1945 to 1975, the hundred of exhibitors of the Puces du Design, all specialized in fashion or furniture from the 50's to 90's and rigorously selected, will be in the move for showing, and selling, post-warpieces that they have selected for you!

Like for each Puces du Design event, no tendancy is privileged in order to satisfy all the curiosities and interest centers and so that to present 20th century creations in their entire affluence and diversity: famous and unknown pieces, rare works for collectors or objects for everybody's decoration, small lamps for under €100 or monumental sofa's at several thousands of euros… This unique characteristic of the Puces du Design to gather in the same event, in a free public access, 20th century design in all its multiplicities, is one of the reason of its success; it will be, this autumn again, respected.

For this 23rd edition of the Puces du Design, the event will be on the stand of Flavien Gaillard Concept who will propose one of the first retrospectives dedicated to Max Sauze lights. Trained as a sculptor and born in 1933, Max Sauze has realized lights series in the 70's or axceptionnel pieces that will be shown and sold, on the next Puces du Design: undertow the pop movement of this decade with its general use of plastic, Max Sauze elaborates steel lamps that play wonderfully with space and light.

This exhibition will light the work of a designer much appreciated by the professionals, but for the moment quite unknown by the public. It should contribute once again to the democratization and design education that play the Puces du Design since their creation in 1999 by Fabien Bonillo.

22° Puces du Design Paris 2010
Location of 22° Puces du Design Paris 2010

For the 22nd Puces du Design, the small and the famous history of design are told at the water's edge.

The Puces du Design have celebrated their 10 years last year. Concidered as the most important event showing 20th and 21st century design by our European neighbours (some of them have found their inspiration in the event), the Puces du Design have conjugated with succes since 1999:

- Popular dimension: between 35 000 and 40 000 visitors for each event
- Quality: the most famous international dealers and collectors considered the Puces du Design as an inevitable rendez-vous.

For their 22nd fair, the Puces du Design invite once again all the publics Quai de la Loire, on the banks of the Bassin de la Vilette, Paris 19° for telling small histories of objects and the famous history of design, through 20th century emblematic pieces, selected with passion by the hundred European antique dealers specialized in the second part of the 20th century.

On each of the 100 stands of the next Puces du Design, all the visitors, scholar or curious, expert or amateur, thirty-year old creatives or nostalgic persons in retirement could freely disover a page of history of ‘50 to '80s design: with its inevitable icons, its exceptional pieces and its more anodyne objects that have nevertheless crossed the decades without taking any wrinkle.

This spring again, from Thursday 27 untill Sunday 30 of May, the Puces du Design will make to meet the styles and the epochs, the exuberance and the sobriety, fashion and design in a convival and festive atmosphere without sacrifying excellence!

Salon du Vintage Paris 2010
Location of Salon du Vintage Paris 2010

The fifth Salon du Vintage opens its doors on Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th April 2010 in the very heart of the Marais at 39 Rue des Francs-Bourgeois. Housed in a 19th century former metal works of more than 1200 m2 the salon will play host to over 70 professional exhibitors and specialists in vintage fashion, furniture and accessories.

This latest Salon du Vintage will give pride of place to the 1990's, since they too have now come of “vingt âge”, with an exhibition of 90's furniture into the fair. The 1990's marked a break with the graphic and flashy extravagance of the 1980's, and a turning towards a spareness bordering on minimalism. Just like the crisis we are going through at the moment, the early 1990's saw a widening ecological awareness and the emergence of sustainable development, producing some original solutions in fashion and design. Ecological materials, organic shapes, return to basics: design turned its back definitively on the norms of the 80's.

The 80's used geometrical forms and flashy colours, epitomised by the “Memphis” movement. In opposition to this trend, the designers of the 90's took to promoting organic forms, using organic materials. Thanks to new intelligent technologies, the designers of the 1990's put the preservation of the environment at the heart of their designs. The young generation launched the fashion of “organic” furniture, using recycled and natural materials. At Cappellini's, Marcel Wanders combined handcrafts with industrial technology. The “Knotted Chair”, published in 1996, was created with plaited string made from aramid and carbon fibres stiffened with epoxy resin.

The 1990's saw the rise of designers such as Philippe Starck, a star designer of the late 20th century. He excelled in the renovation of hotels and the design of furniture using organic and animal shapes. In the mid-90's, he turned more towards the design of day-to-day objects. His design was inspired by the intimacy of the human body, while at the same time he resorted to industrial mass production. Zoomorphic and organic shapes reflect the changes in contemporary technological thinking.

21° Puces du Design Paris 2010
Location of 21° Puces du Design Paris 2010

On October 8, 9, 10 and 11 2009, more than 90 antique dealers specialized in ‘50 to ‘80 fashion and furniture will be gathered Quai de la Loire,on the banks of the Bassin de la Villette, Paris 19° for showing a subjective and elective selection of the most famous pieces of the 20th century: Saarinen, Paulin and Panton, Prouvé, Mouille and Matégot, all the most famous signatures will be there but there will be less known pieces too that are interesting because of their original shapes, unusual material use and quality of manufacturing.

Puces: is in French ‘flea market': a place where some people are selling second hand objects.
Design: is a discipline that wish to harmonize humane environ ment from the conception to usual objects until urbanism.
Puces du design: is a new and original concept created by Fabien Bonillo in 1999: he has gathered for the first time in Europe, antique dealers specialized in the second part of the 20th century, on the street and with free public access. According to these criteria of specialization and accessibility, the Puces du Design is still nowadays unique.

Today, all the magazines present interiors that associate contem porary and historical design. But 10 years ago, it was not so obvious: only a few specialists knew Pierre Paulin and we could find Eames armchairs in Emmaüs warehouses, which means that people gave them away….
In 10 years, professionals are more numerous, the exhibitors of the Puces du Design are too and the public, curious for the first time, has evolved as well. The visitor recognizes the most important styles of the 2nd half of 20th century, he knows the most famous designer names like Panton, Knoll or Prouvé and knows the difference between an original edition and a prototype, a new edition and a first piece.

For each Puces du Design, some events are organized to enrich this out-door rendez-vous with the most famous designers of the last century. Andrée Putman and Roger Tallon had supported the first editions, the ‘5.5 Designers' did one of their first exhibition for the Puces du Design in 2004… and in October it will be the same.

Cédric Morisset, exhibition cu rator who is used to work on new talent emergence will show an event on recent design
