Brussels Design Market Spring 2012
Location of Brussels Design Market Spring 2012

Founded in 2002, the Brussels Design Market is a flea market devoted entirely to design with an emphasis on products dating from the 50s to the early 80s. Following its expansion, the 13th edition of the largest post-war design market is taking place in the Old Habour Station, protected from possible rain showers. Brussels Design Market is one of the oldest design events in Brussels!

On Saturday April 21 and Sunday April 22, some hundred exhibitors, professionals and dedicated amateurs, hailing from Belgium, France, the Netherlands, Germany and Italy will be unpacking furniture and other design objects from the 50s, 60s, 70s and early 80s in the convivial atmosphere of a busy flea market. The event, for the public, dealers and collectors alike will take place in the magnificent, historic setting of the old harbour station at Tour & Taxis, 86c avenue du Port, 1000 Brussels (entrance via the Tour & Taxis site).

Besides very rare pieces that are rather aimed towards experienced collectors, there are also more affordable and very beautiful design pieces: Eames and Panton chairs, Knoll tables, Bertoia armchairs, etc. A treasure trove of finds: you can expect to discover Scandinavian, Belgian, French, Italian and American furniture alongside ceramics and glassware, collectors pieces and accessories in plastic, metal, wood and Bakelite. Of course there will be coffee, breakfast and drinks on site. The cherry on the cake is the champagne bar, welcoming visitors and thanking them for their interest and passion for design.

PRACTICAL - The 13th Brussels Design Market (Indoor), grand unveiling of the 20th Century, will take place ‘from the back of the lorry' (to allow everyone to have the same chance to find and buy objects) and is spread over two days. During these days, it will welcome 5000 visitors.

16e Pavillon des Arts et du Design Paris 2012
Location of 16e Pavillon des Arts et du Design Paris 2012

Refinement and elegance, the Pavilion of Art and Design represents the French taste, which promulgates the mixture and the juxtaposition of styles, has today a worldwide recognition. The Pavilion is a demonstration of diversity which perfectly handles styles and sceneries.

For each edition of the Pavilion the exhibitors compete with creation, taste and talent to offer a unique and wonderful atmosphère on their stand. The Pavilion of Art and Design transforms itself in a great, smart and tasteful scene, limitless reunion of talents from all over the world.

A major event in the art market, this event now takes place in several capitals (Paris – London – New York). Devoted to design, the decorative arts and 20th Century painting, the PAD brings together the most talented French and international dealers of the moment.

In Paris, the PAD is an eclectic fair that advocates contrasting styles and a mix of genres. It is the trendiest date on the Parisian calendar and offers the public a refined selection of 20th Century creation.

The 2012 edition is notable for the numbers of important art dealers in attendance, the growing presence of contemporary design and the unstoppable rise of the decorative arts.

Currently, the PAD is indisputably the world's biggest historical, modern and contemporary design fair. The PAD selection committee has continued its good work of selecting exhibitors: generations are being renewed, the circle is expanding and growing considerably in strength and influence.

The early 20th axe has been reinforced through the presence of Oscar Graf and Franck Laigneau, but also thanks to Willy Huybrechts' first Parisian participation (the gallery already exhibits in London and New York).

The contemporary design galleries present last year have renewed their participation in 2012: the Italian gallery Secondome, Maria Wettergren, BSL, Tools Gallery. The arrival of London gallery Fumi also adds to this axe.

20th Century Cincinnati Show 2012
Location of 20th Century Cincinnati Show 2012

CINCINNATI: The new, state-of-the-art East West Exhibit Hall at the Sharonville Convention Center will host the 18th annual 20th Century Cincinnati modern design retrospective on the weekend of February 25 & 26, 2012. Attendance at the annual show and sale has doubled in the past ten years, so the event is perfectly poised to take advantage of the new facility's enlarged exhibit space. Patrons will now be treated to even more variety from a greater number of vendors: nearly sixty dealers from ten states will fill the hall with classic modernist forms – many from the century's foremost designers.

20th Century Cincinnati celebrates the avant garde art, furnishings, architecture and fashions of the 1920's through 1970's. Formally defined as “modern” by academics in the early 1900's , these innovative design trends came to include the styles that characterized the century: Art Deco, Streamline, Machine Age, Futuristic, Mid-Century Modern and the Op Art/Pop Art eras.

20th Century Cincinnati's reputation is firmly rooted in a fantastic selection of authentic vintage furniture and lighting. Show exhibitors also offer period decorative accessories such as paintings, sculptures, posters, art glass, pottery, dinnerware and textiles. Several top-shelf jewelry and apparel dealers contribute an important fashion element to the mix. Fun and funky pop culture memorabilia is icing on the cake. This show is playful, but can also be a serious study of the era's most important designers and architects. 20th Century Cincinnati dealers offer variety intended to fit every budget. All merchandise is guaranteed as represented by the seller.

20th Century Cincinnatiwill present Beyond Bakelite – Designs in Early Plastic for its 2012 Special Exhibit The exhibit takes a collector's view at the discovery and use of synthetic plastics in the first half of the century. From plain beginnings as a hard, dark material intended for industrial applications, plastics had evolved by the 1930's into a rich and colorful substance found in a variety of consumer items. By the end of WW II, a skeptical American public had totally embraced the new material – helping plastic become a symbol of Modern life. Today's collectors most often concentrate on either the flamboyantly carved and inlaid “Bakelite” jewelry; or, focus on the elaborately molded and colorful “Catalin” radios. Beyond Bakelite will feature both of these categories and more: uncommon objects including furnishings, household objects, and fashion accessories.

A two-hour show preview will kick-off 20th Century Cincinnati activities at 9:00 a.m. Saturday. Preview admission is $20 in advance and $25 at the door. Preview passes include the exclusive shopping period, open light breakfast bar and a full-weekend pass. Advanced tickets are available by mail, phone or by link at the event's website.
